Crystal Drive is the solo project from George Szegedy, the drummer of the Peoples Temple.

As the drummer of the Lansing, Michigan-based psych-punk band Peoples Temple, George Szegedy co-engineered a string of lo-fi LPs on HoZac Records that journalist John Mulvey from UNCUT Magazine praised for their “antique ‘60s sound, and ramshackle spontaneity.”

While the Peoples Temple have been on hiatus, Szegedy, under the new moniker Crystal Drive, went in a new direction and wrote and self-recorded a new solo album of synthesizer-driven pop tunes. The production for the new disc, “Execute,” started in January 2015 and wrapped up in May 2016.

“I use a lot of ghetto recording equipment and old rackmounts,” Szegedy said of the new Crystal Drive record. “It’s a lot of the stuff we recorded Peoples Temple albums with. It’s recording and sound experimentation – a lot of vocal tracks and percussion and synths. There are a lot of real sounds, too: drums, slide whistle, bells and shakers.”

Szegedy, who supplied the lead vocals and played all of the instruments on the “Execute” LP except electric guitar, said he utilized an assortment of throwback organs and synthesizers on the new LP – creating a sound he considers “a little dark and strange.”

Some of his recent sonic influences includes “tons of Rundgren,” Roxy Music, the Cars, Ultravox, Human League, and other ‘80s LPs. Those nostalgic inspirations paired well with an assortment of other creative stimuli.

“There is definitely some heavy drug and classic sci-fi themes – a lot of sex too,” Szegedy said. “I get sick of hearing songs with the same lyrics about relationships.”
